This catalog was published on the occasion of the exhibition Affects at Kunstpalais, Emoties at Gemeentemuseum Helmond, and Gemengde Gevoelens in the Cultuurcentrum Mechelen.

Affects are an essential stimulant for processes of socio-political change. They have an impact on our social and political planning, on public debates and values, they form an important part of our culture, social life, and politics. Affects question existing power structures and gain in importance the more affect-driven people clash with an opposing financial, military, or state administration. Affects are extremely individual, they arise and develop in human interactions between supporters and opponents. However, affects also describe communication processes and demand participation in things to come.

These observations formed the stimulus for this extraordinary exhibition cooperation between Kunstpalais in Erlangen, the Gemeentemuseum Helmond, and the Cultuurcentrum Mechelen, titled Affekte – Emotions – Mixed Emotions, the exhibitions dealt with the increasing importance of affects on society. The extensive catalog introduces the conceptual approaches of the discourse surrounding affects and features the participating artists in interviews.
